  In the rock art of Brandberg, human figures comprise more than 40% of the images and among the many animal species depicted giraffe are often the most numerous. Few of the animals featured in the paintings are represented in bones recovered from archaeological excavations. Brandberg. One of the most famous mountain ranges in Namibia is undoubtedly the Brandberg Mountains due to the collection of rock art contained within its folds, it is also the highest within the country. Its name perfectly describes the wealth of colors that explode on the mountain side when the sun sets in the west, Brandberg is Afrikaans for Fire Mountain.

The Brandberg is a site of great spiritual significance to the Damara San (Bushman) people. Regarding rock art, the most famous site is the so-called 'White Lady' rock painting, located on a rock face with other artwork under a small rock overhang, in the Tsisab Ravine at the foot of the Brandberg Mountain, including the higher elevations, contains more than 1, rock shelters.   As the rains ended and the winter began, five determined ladies from Namibia’s communal conservancies scaled the Brandberg mountain; to show that they could do it, and to improve their career prospects. After seven days on the mountain they had earned the respect of experienced mountain guides, and learnt a good deal about the rock art high up the mountain. The Damara name .

THE WHITE LADY OF THE BRANDBERG. Surviving rain, weathering and time, the White Lady rock painting is the highlight of a Brandberg visit. The White Lady, the name coined by Abbé Henri Breuil inis now understood to represent a healer or medicine man holding a bow and arrow in one hand and a cup or wand in the other.

There are lots of reasons for making art, and scholars speculate at length about the meanings of prehistoric rock art. While our plans proved to be somewhat over-ambitious in light of the extremely difficult terrain, all the logistics worked out fine, and we did succeed in visiting a substantial number of the. Period I, Upper Palaeolithic; Period II, Mesolithic; and Period III, Chalcolithic.
